DJDJ - Bunker Hill Monument

Site of the Battle of Bunker Hill
The beginning of the Freedom Trail is Bunker Hill Monument. The Battle of Bunker Hill occurred on June 17, 1775, and was one of the earliest battles of the Revolutionary War. Here, the famous command "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes," was ordered, although the orator is disputed (William Prescott, Israel Putnam, or Richard Gridley). The command was said so Patriot troops would save their limited ammunition/gun powder until they knew they could accurately hit the British. Interestingly, the British won the battle, but the loss of a disproportionate amount of British officers led to the eventual end of British occupation in Boston.
